PATENT PENDING

A hidden speakeasy in the building where Tesla once conducted his experiments.

New York City has a lot of pretty speak easy bars with hidden doors in the back of cafes, barbers or restaurants. Patent, located at 49 West 27th Street, is one of them: Patent Coffee is a coffee shop offering pastries and snacks during the day, and Patent Pending is a secret-door underground cocktail bar at night. During the day, Patent Coffee will offer specialty grab-and-go coffee in a small, standing-room-only space. After 5 p.m., the doors lock and the radio-themed speakeasy Patent Pending emerges. Hidden behind an ordinary-looking door in the back, the bar is a trendy speakeasy in the old cellar of the Radio Wave Building where Nikola Tesla lived and performed his experiments in the early 1900s. The 34-seat cocktail cave can be accessed by ringing a buzzer at street level and then passing through the candle-lit coffee shop to get to the hidden door that conceals the bar.
